Building Your Professional Practice: A Panel Discussion
Barry Weissman will be moderating a panel discussion informing ADR practitioners about starting and growing their mediation practice. His presentation will cover several practical and strategic topics including but not limited to:
The Mediator's Toolkit
That First Telephone Call from a Prospect: Identifying Personality Traits of the Caller * Closing for a Meeting
Marketing and Branding: Materials * Creating a "Niche" * Consistency with "The True You" * Networking
Presenting the MCDR Mentor/Mentee Initiative and MACRO's support
After this presentation each of the panel members will offer their personal experiences in mediation and questions will be accepted from attendees. If time permits the attendees will break out into small discussion groups facilitated by a panel member.
Panel Members Include:
Your Moderator, Barry Weissman. Currently in addition to his divorce & property mediation practice, Barry is on the Board of Directors, Executive Committee, and Treasurer of MCDR. He teaches two master classes through MCDR: “Building Your Professional Practice: A Workshop” and “The Many Meanings of Money: A Workshop on Property Mediation.” Barry is also a strong supporter of the new MCDR Mentor/Mentee Initiative, acting as a mentor. Over the past ten years Barry has developed a successful ADR practice. For thirty years prior he worked as a fee-only financial adviser to high asset individuals.
Panelist: Robert C. Morgan. Bob attended the University of Baltimore School of Law and practiced civil litigation, primarily the defense of health care providers in malpractice cases for 38 years. His practice was state-wide but centered in the Baltimore area. Bob is licensed to practice law in Maryland, the District of Columbia and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Bob took the 40-hour mediation course through the MSBA in 2012 and has been mediating through the circuit court appointed ADR programs in Howard, Frederick and Cecil counties.
Since retiring from his full-time law practice in February of this year, Bob now volunteers in the District Court of Maryland, Day of Trial Settlement Conference Attorney program in Howard and Carroll counties. Bob has opened a mediation practice known as Morgan Mediation LLC and is being generously mentored by Barry Weissman on establishing and marketing his ADR practice.
Panelist: Heather V. Fogg, Quality Assistance Director, Maryland Judiciary Mediation and Conflict Resolution Office (MACRO). She is an experienced conflict resolution practitioner in a variety of practices, including circle‐keeping, community conferencing, mediating and facilitating dialogue. Heather is an adjunct faculty member of Howard Community College and Towson University where she teaches Introduction to Conflict Resolution and Introduction to Restorative Justice. She also serves as a founding board member for the Circle of Restorative Initiatives (CRI) for Maryland. Heather earned her Master’s and Bachelor’s degrees in Psychology from the College of William and Mary and the Ohio State University respectively.
Panelist: Charles Franklin, P.E., President, Franklin Technical Services, LLC. Vice President of MCDR, a mediator, arbitrator, and successful entrepreneur across diverse business sectors, Charles is successful in whatever he chooses. Not only does he offer insight into business development in not-for-profits and in the public sector, Charles has been and continues to be a driving force in the MCDR Mentor/Mentee Initiative. Charles offers a unique insight and perspective into the practice of ADR.
Panelist: Harold Cohen, Ph.d, Past President of MCDR. Harold is board-certified in healthcare management and is a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives. Harold remains certified as a chief fire officer by the Center for Public Safety Excellence, and is a nationally registered paramedic with the National Registry of EMTs. He now serves as a consultant for public safety systems, a professor for undergraduate healthcare administration, and graduate public service leadership programs at various universities. This includes the Executive Fire Officer Program in Emmitsburg, MD. Much of his consulting involves mediations concerning fire and EMS, labor/management systems,EEOC, healthcare, and other public processes.
