MCDR is offering a series of Master Classes for mediators and other ADR practitioners in different Maryland locations.  The classes are four hours in length on a variety of topics, and certificates of attendance will be provided.  Mediator participants may submit these for consideration for MPME requirements and for Circuit Court continuing training requirements.  To register for one or more master classes, please use the attached registration form, make checks out to MCDR and send to the address, as noted. 

Cost:  $75 for MCDR members   $125 for non-members

1.  Using Neurolinguistic Programming (NLP) in Mediation:  A Few Effective Tools for Enhancing Communication and Understanding

Brief Description:  NLP offers a model for a simple, yet meaningful way to understand and interpret how a person processes their experiences.  By identifying language patterns and observing non-verbal behavior, mediators can understand different modes of perception for communicating effectively with the clients. 

 

2.  The Art of Effective Listening for Mediators

3.  Strategies for Managing High Conflict in Family Mediation

 

            Trainer:       Aza Howard Butler

          Date:             Saturday, May 31     1 PM to 5 PM Comfort Inn in Towson

Brief Description:  Mediators need to be able to stay calm and centered in the midst of uproar, yelling, and accusations, at times.  This workshop will focus on some strategies for dealing with high conflict, and ways to turn the situation into an opportunity for real communication.  The workshop will include presentation, discussion and role plays based on situations from actual cases.   If you wish, bring your “worst problem” from a high conflict family mediation case for discussion.

 

4.  Self Awareness and Conflict:  The Enneagram as Catalyst

Brief Description:  Self awareness, the ongoing attention to one’s internal state, has a profound influence on the way we “do” conflict.  The Enneagram is a personality typology that identifies nine separate and distinct personality types.  Participants will type themselves, discuss attributes of their type and interact with each other and presenters on the relevance of type to conflict, dispute resolution and relationships.

The National Institute for Conflict Resolution Training


The National Institute for Conflict Resolution will hold a 40 hour basic mediation workshop from April 2 to April 6 from 9 AM to 5:30 PM each day in Annapolis, MD. This workshop is for anyone interested in learning about mediation processes and augmenting their present practice and work with mediation skills, including attorneys, managers, and human service professionals, educators, religious leaders, persons in organizations who want to incorporate mediation in their professional skills, and private practitioners and consultants who would like to supplement their skills and practice. The program is highly interactive and promotes participation by all present.

Faculty:

Patricia A. "Trish" Miller, Esq.

Trish is a Harvard Law School trained mediator, attorney and law professor. She has over 25 years experience as a negotiator, mediator, arbitrator and executive coach. Trish facilitates workshops in negotiation/communication skills to a wide range of individuals from federal hostage negotiators to lawyers to business executives of all types. She has been named to Maryland's Top 100 Women in business the maximum of three times and is an executive coach in communication skills. She is an ACR certfied Advanced Practitioner and trainer.

Martin A. Kranitz, M.A.
Martin Kranitz is a psychologist and has been a divorce mediator for over 25 years. He is the author of "Getting Apart Together" and was one of the first two child access mediators for Anne Arundel County Circuit Court. His wealth of experience allowed him to be one of the few non-attorney practitioners in the world to be accepted into Harvard Law School's mediation program. He has appeared in numerous tv/ radio shows, including CNN as an expert in mediation.

Both Trish and Martin have mediated over 2000 cases each and served on the MD Alternative Dispute Resolution Commission and the MD Mediator Excellence Council.

This training workshop is in compliance with Rule 17 for mediators in the Circuit Courts of MD.
