We have been training mediators for more than 25 years. Since 1984, we have trained thousands of attorneys, therapists, social workers, managers and others in mediation skills. Participants regularly tell us that this is some of the best professional training they have ever received. ACR Approved:

All of our workshops are approved by the national professional association, the Association for Conflict Resolution. We meet Maryland's Court of Appeal's Rule 17 requirements and S.W. Category 1 CEUs and S.W. Category 1 CEUs .We can help you obtain CLEs and CEUs in other jurisdictions


 A 400+ page Manual provides participants with an invaluable resource as part of the workshop and a reference guide beyond it. The divorce workshop also includes a CD with ready-to-use forms.

Our workshops are limited to twelve participants. Small group role-playing sessions allow participants to learn the skills of mediation in a safe space with one-on-one feedback from experienced coaches.

The workshops will be led by:

Carl D. Schneider, Ph.D.Over the past twenty-five years Carl has trained several thousand mediators locally, nationally, and abroad. Currently Director of Mediation Matters, Bethesda, Maryland, Carl is a registered psychologist, licensed clinical Marriage and Family Therapist, a Certified Mediator with the Maryland Council on Dispute Resolution and with the Supreme Court of Virginia, and is an Advanced Practitioner Member of the Association for Conflict Resolution (ACR). Carl is the former Director (1981 1989) of Divorce Mediation Service, a group practice of 16 mediators in the Chicago area, and former Director of the Mediation Program of Woodbury College in Montpelier, Vermont. He has been on the Board of Directors of the national Academy of Family Mediators, the Mediation Council of Illinois, and the Family Mediation Association of Georgia. Carl is author of Shame, Exposure and Privacy (Norton, 1992) and has served on the editorial board of Mediation Quarterly. He holds a M. Div. degree from Union Theological Seminary in N.Y.C. and a Ph.D. from Harvard University.

Eileen L. Coen, Esq., co-mediates, co-trains and coaches for training workshops with Mediation Matters. Eileen has mediated hundreds of divorce and custody cases and workplace conflicts in the private and public sectors, including DC and Maryland courts, state and federal agencies. She is a Certified Mediator with the Maryland Council on Dispute Resolution and a member of the Association for Conflict Resolution (ACR). Eileen brings her experience as an attorney, facilitator and trainer in cross-cultural communication to her role as a mediator. Previously, Eileen worked as an attorney with the United Nations High Commission for Refugees, traveling throughout Southeast Asia. Eileen earned her J.D. degree from George Washington University and is a member of the DC and California bars.

Coaches: experienced mediators will assist with individual coaching for participants in small group role plays.

Early registration fee for the 40-Hour Basic Workshop is $1285.  For the Basic 40-Hour Workshop, $1245.  For the 20-Hour Workshops, it is $745.

40-hour Basic Mediation Training

Ellen F. Kandell and Joyce Ann Mitchell are experienced attorneys, mediators, trainers and college professors. They are featured on various training videos and hold leadership positions in the legal and ADR communities.  Between them they have trained over 500 people in various subjects.

Ellen is the President of Alternative Resolutions, LLC. She has mediated cases for metropolitan area law firms, numerous federal agencies and Montgomery County Government. A majority of her mediation experience is in the area of workplace, domestic relations and civil litigation. She is an Adjunct Professor at the University of Maryland and Catholic University of America where she teaches courses in negotiation and conflict management.

Joyce mediates nationwide. She is on the roster of several ADR organizations and mediates for federal agencies. She is a certified mediator with the states of Virginia and North Carolina and on the mediator rosters of the various courts of suburban DC/MD. Joyce is an Adjunct Professor at the Columbus School of Law at Catholic University, where she teaches negotiation, mediation and arbitration techniques and the University of Maryland School of Law where she teaches arbitration. Her legal practice of 30 years is limited to business, employment and labor law.

Course Format:

The training format is very dynamic and includes extensive use of role plays, exercises and simulations. Role plays are selected to compliment the subject matter areas of the participants. Each trainee will have an opportunity to practice skills and be observed and critiqued multiple times. The training meets the requirements of Maryland Rule 17-106 for court appointed mediators. Experienced senior mediators will assist with coaching and critiques. The cost includes a continental breakfast, healthy afternoon snacks, training materials, professional resources and a certificate of completion. Parking is plentiful in county garages and the metro is nearby.

BASIC ETHICS FOR MEDIATORS

YOUR PERSONAL CONFLICT STYLE
Conflict resolution requires for you to be aware and adjust to a particular situation.  You will take the Thomas-Kilmann Conflict Mode Instrument to determine your preferred conflict resolution style:  Avoid, Accommodate, Compete, Compromise or Collaborate.  Explore how well your preferred style works in different situations and when it may be necessary to sue a different style.  Identify the styles that others bring to conflicts and how to work effectively with them.  Tuition waiver applies; seniors pay fee only.

40-HOUR BASIC MEDIATION COURSE
This 40-hour interactive and experiential training offers you a how-to-guide for conducting mediations of various types of conflicts.  An introduction to conflict theory assists you in exploring your own conflict style and how that may help or hinder the process.  You will learn and practice the 7-Step Mediation Model and will learn how to handle anger, listen strategically, balance power and write agreements.  This course fulfills the requirements for Rule 17 of the Maryland Rules of Procedure for Alternative Dispute Resolution.  This course is approved for 40 CEUs from the Maryland Board of Social Work Examiners.  Tuition waiver applies; seniors pay fee only.

ADVANCED LISTENING FOR MEDIATORS
So you've taken "I" messages.  Now is the time to really open your ears, eyes, mind and heart and listen holistically.  During this class, you will practice listening strategically and directively, learn how to listen with body and mind, and how to let the speaker know they have been heard.  This course is filled with exercises and simulations that encourage you to practice what you've learning in real time.
