Program

Hilla Keren and Tarek Abuata will speak about the process of Living Room Dialogue and share their experience of transformation, through dialogue, from victims of war to peace activists.  The commitment to dialogue helped them to overcome mistrust and fear, and allows them to continue to provide healing as they work together to build trust between their peoples.

Background

Living Room Dialogue is a national movement convening Jews, Palestinian Muslims and Christians to expand cultural awareness, encourage mutual learning, and promote international understanding.  Through dialogue and compassionate listening, people who have viewed each other with mistrust and fear gain an understanding of each other's stories, histories, thoughts, mental models, and heart.  The varied perspectives converge to change the nature of relationships and uncover a new social intelligence for the good of all.

Presenters

Tarek Abuata grew up in Bethlehem, Palestine, and moved to the United States along with his family at the age of 12, two years after the 1987 Palestinian Uprising.  After receiving his J.D. in 2002, Tarek spent a year in Palestine working with the Negotiations Support Unit, a group of advisors to the Palestinian Negotiations.  Tarek presently serves as the director of "Love Thy Neighbor."

Hilla Keren, LCSW-C, grew up in a Kibbutz in Israel near the Jordan River.  Facing the intifada, Hilla felt helpless and had a growing need to do something meaningful.  Hilla filled this need when she joined the Living Room Dialogue, a non-violent approach to the conflict between Palestinians and Israelis, three years ago.
